BVGS helps student secure accountancy placement despite ongoing uncertainty

Despite rising unemployment rates and challenging economic circumstances, Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School (BVGS) recently helped a former student find a work placement with an established Tamworth-based accountancy firm.

Harry Slaymaker, who left BVGS in the summer was looking for a Career in Accountancy. He has  successfully secured a position on the accountancy apprenticeship scheme at Adams Moore, allowing him to gain valuable experience amid the ongoing disruption of the pandemic.

Having been longstanding supporters of the school through the BVGS Corporate Partnership, Adams Moore were keen to recruit Harry, entrusting him to support the existing team across a range of tasks and projects.

During his time at BVGS, Harry assisted the Corporate Partnership as one of the Development Office Interns, familiarising himself with the existing partners, including Adams Moore.

It’s yet another example of how the Corporate Partnership is mutually beneficial for students and partners, allowing businesses to access an untapped pool of talent, with an increasing number of young people taking an apprenticeship route instead of going to university.

Martin Crook, Managing Director at Adams Moore, said: “We’ve been a member of the BVGS Corporate Partnership for 2 Years, supporting the school in whatever way possible, whilst utilising the networking events to build strong working relationships with other businesses.

“Throughout our time with the partnership, I’ve become very aware of the school’s commitment to supporting students, helping them get their foot on the ladder even after they’ve graduated.

“After hearing about the apprenticeship scheme and meeting with Harry, his passion and desire to be given an opportunity within the industry was clear to see, which made the decision to bring him on board an easy one to make.

“Since joining us, Harry has grasped the opportunity with both hands, throwing himself into all aspects of Accountancy and becoming a valued member of the team, despite the unusual working conditions brought about by Covid-19. He is now also starting his studies to eventually become Chartered.

“It’s been a great experience so far, and one that I’d highly recommend to other businesses, especially if they are in need of young, hungry and talented individuals to join their team.”

Brian Davies, BVGS Development Director, commented: “Whilst the Corporate Partnership offers a networking forum for local businesses to promote their services, it can also be an effective way for partners to strengthen their existing workforce.

“The challenges created by the pandemic have been well-documented, which is why it’s important that we give students the best chance of finding an appropriate placement after they have graduated.

“Using our contacts at the partnership, we have successfully secured opportunities for many students, providing them with a platform to gain valuable experience at the start of their careers.”
