Gavin Smith OV 1994-2001

Read the latest in our series of OV Interviews: connecting classmates and detailing another varied post-Vesey experience.
Gavin was at Vesey from 1994-2001 and during his time here threw himself into the Vesey sporting community. His love of sport inspired him to go on to study Sport Psychology at Central Lancashire University, with three other Veseyans from his year also making the move to Preston with him. His career history is diverse, with Gavin consistently striving to have an identity outside that of a Father and a Corporate man, he has found an interest in setting up businesses and websites, such as a gym in Mere Green and becoming a qualified Personal Training and Fitness Instructor.

He first began working in Procurement in 2007, first for a start-up online retailer and since then has enjoyed significant career progression at HMV Group and Beiersdorf. Gavin now works as Head of Procurement for Products, Marketing & IT at Mitchells and Butlers. He says his role sees him lead on all areas of purchasing for everything other than food or drink, effectively ‘anything you could drop on your foot’. Procurement gives Gavin satisfaction as every day is different, challenging and he works with a variety of colleagues and clients.

Sport has played a key role throughout Gavin’s life, and it was through sporting networks that he kept in touch with fellow OVs before the days of Facebook and Whatsapp. Now, with connecting with old friends and fellow Veseyans being so much easier, Gavin has extended his network of OVs and enjoys meeting up for a catch-up over a drink.

Since leaving Vesey Gavin has returned to school twice: once to attend an OV dinner with both his Father and Brother, who also attended Vesey, and on the second occasion to attend a Corporate Partner Speed Networking event. He says it is stunning to see the changes in technology provision at the school, which have been enabled by the building of a new specialised STEM block.

Although this was not realised when attending BVGS, Gavin now reflects that his time at school whilst giving him a sound educational grounding, prepared him thoroughly for a life in business. In business roles, like at Vesey, high standards of personal and professional behaviour are expected, which came naturally to Gavin thanks to his experience of the standards set at BVGS.

In the future, Gavin wishes to continue to keep in touch with BVGS and hopes to be able to organise a Class of 2001 reunion, to be held on their 20th anniversary of leaving the school at the annual OVA Dinner 2021.
