Tamworth Steel Stockholders Ltd (TSS) is one of the latest businesses to join the Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School (BVGS) Corporate Partnership Programme. The family-run business is one of the 25 Corporate Partners to have joined the initiative to date.

The partnership was developed to help support the school, as it will soon be feeling the impact of an estimated £3bn shortfall in the government’s education budget.

Jon Ratledge, Managing Director at TSS commented: “We understand these are difficult times for schools, who have so far responded by approaching parents to help bridge the gap in funding.

“It’s inspiring to see a school be so creative; forming something that connects the local community and businesses, whilst benefitting every person involved is something to be proud of.

“Both my father, my wife and I attended the school and we have very fond memories of our time there. We’re delighted to give back to a school that gave us a good start in life.

“BVGS helped us to develop a sound foundation of knowledge. It helped to shape who we are today; in our case, establishing and running a successful business which is now employing over 120 staff across eight sites.

“My father, who is now retired, set up the business in 1973. After I left school, he advised me to work for another company before coming to work at TSS.

“Once I’d gained some industry experience, I then joined the company in 1982 and started by working in the yard drilling, sawing, shearing the steel, working in the warehouse, driving, and delivering goods.

“After having been Works Manager, I then joined the sales team in the office and eventually became Managing Director to take overall responsibility.

“The partnership with BVGS is helping us to spread awareness about our offering; we’ve met a couple of Corporate Partners that were surprised to hear about the variety of clients we service.

“Working with both trade and the public, we welcome contractors, schools, fabricators, farmers, and even someone needing a piece of steel to fix their gate at home – no customer is too small for us at TSS.”

Brian Davies, Development Director and Deputy Sports Director at the school said: “It’s really great to have TSS on board. We’ve worked with Jon and his team before when they sponsored our inaugural golf day in June 2016.

“We’re working with some fantastic businesses as part of the partnership. Some partners have already started working together or referring business within the group. It’s proof that the partnership truly is beneficial for all involved.”
